Looking for a great Spanish/Basque restaurant in Vancouver

I've got a Basque friend here on an extended stay. I'm looking for recommendations for a restaurant featuring Basque food (if there are any). Alternatively, a great Spanish restaurant might suffice.

Has anyone ever been to La Masia in Surrey? http://www.lamasiarestaurant.com/menu... I know the OP is looking for Vancouver but if you're desperate and this place is any good...

The food @ Baru has nothing to to do with Spain or the Basque region, it started as a sort of Latin American fusion place with decent food and some odd management quirks (see Dinehere.ca for details)

Looks more like a bar than ever now but haven't been in for a while.

La Bodega is a good choise. If a Tapas Bar is OK (ie they have nothing more elaborate than traditional jamon, pintxos and tapas) - Barcelona Cafe (with the caveat that this place has very mixed reviews)

Having grown up in Vancouver , I find going to La Bodega is like going to MacDonald's: you forget why you haven't gone in a long time and about 3 seconds after you take your first bite you remember why.
There is definitely room in the Vancouver restaurant scene for a solid, creative, Spanish tapas restaurant.

Agree 100%. I looked forward to Cafe Barcelona's opening for that reason...however, they only really do tapas. I would love to see a wider restaurant menu.

I hear ya, ls :-) but I'd still rather go to LB than CB. If you know what to order and have good luck with the cooking at LB you can have a pretty decent meal (patatas bravas, hearts of palm, lomos de cerdito, garlic prawns, pincho moruno, some of the offal) and I don't hate the sangria. Agree that it would be great to have better options...
