The Chophouse - Gibbsboro, NJ

Greetings,
Went here for a pre-Valentine's meal on Saturday night. Non-food related: the valet situation is a total nightmare - extremely disorganized and inefficient. The hostesses quietly walk through the insane bar area saying your name when your table is ready and you literally have to chase them down screaming, "That's ME!" so they can hear you.
We were seated 15 minutes after our 8:30 p.m. reservation, not a huge deal, but if you are someone who is a stickler for that, should be noted. Immediately we were flanked by two people, one getting us water, the other bringing three pieces of bread and clearing the two other plates away. Then we sat.

And sat.

For 20 minutes. We had finished our drinks at the bar and I know I looked cranky without a fresh one. There was a manager walking around checking on people and did not even look at us, whilst servers were checking on the tables 2x in the 20 minute span. Finally a server arrived and said, "Thanks for your patience! Sorry 'bout that!"

The rest of the meal went by smoother...I should probably talk about food. The bread was plain old, cold bread. Nothing special there. We ordered the tuna tartare, and while my husband thought it was amazing (but you literally could pluck a tuna out of the ocean and give him a fork and he'd be happy), I felt it was the lamest tartare I've had in...ever. Chunks of tuna and avocado in literally what appeared to be just mayo served with dry six small pieces of dry pita. There was almost an equal amount of tuna to avocado which while I appreciate the attempt to make it like a tuna/avocado roll, I ordered TUNA tartare, not an avocado.

My husband ordered the special - a 1lb dry aged Kansas City sirloin au poivre and I ordered the Oscar Style Filet Mignon. His steak was cooked perfectly rare (as we say, "as rare as legally possible") as was mine. The only issue I had with mine was the size...I'm not saying I needed a yabba dabba dooo steak, but I was expecting a bit more than the three 1/2 inch slices of filet I received (there was about a one-inch piece hidden underneath the three, so say three and 1/8 slices) and about a tablespoon and a half of crab meat on top. All of that with four spears of asparagus for $37.00...that's a little steep...

At some point during the meal, our server said, "Oh, dessert's on us, guys" which is a nice gesture, but I could care less about dessert (we did share a brownie sundae though because COME ON, it's Valentine's Day. It was a typical brownie sundae.)

The wine selection was very good, we have varying wine tastes and couldn't agree on a bottle so ordered by the glass - had the Klinker Brick Zinfandel (this part annoyed me, and I know I sound wine snobbish, but this was ridiculous, "Red or white Zin?" - server "uh...Zinfandel is red..." - me. Not to mention WZ isn't even on their wine list.)

So, $180 later, had an alright meal. And the manager didn't even say bye to us (we passed her as we were leaving). You can make me a burger on a paper plate and a pint of Miller Lite in a plastic cup and I will be happy as long as I'm treated with a little courtesy - their cavalier attitude towards customer service was really off-putting.
