Al Pastor in Salinas

(Note: This thread was split from another thread here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6871... -- The Chowhound Team)

Melanie, I've heard there's a place with authentic al Pastor tacos there in Salinas. Any idea where? Thanks for the response, I've been reading your stuff for many years now.

You'll need to stop at the Tacos Acambaro truck in east Salinas. It's an evening wagon and sets up about 6pm on weekends. This is actually a trailered wagon rather than a truck. You can see the spit through the big picture windows. Fernando doesn't offer roasted piña though, if that's important to you. He is from Acambaro and make it in the style of his home town.

Others that I like are from the trucks by Grullense and Mister Taco. Mister Taco has the more heavily marinated style. Neither uses a spit.

Linking isn't working for me now. You can find more info in the Restaurants & Bars links for all three. The El Grullense truck is on Kern St between E. market and E. Alisal streets, and the tacos are better than at the sit-down restaurant on Acosta.

One that I'll warn you away from is the taqueria at Mi Pueblo. It has a spit and the pineapple, but I didn't care for the flavor at all.

Further south, 'hounds have been excited at al pastor in King City.
