Which Besh?
Coming to NO next month and am trying to decide which of the Besh restaurants to go to. Someone who has worked the kitchens of most of them is saying if he had one meal it would be La Provence. I know others are partial to August, Luke, Domenica. Has someone been to all of them or at least a few of them to give me some guidance and or be able to contrast them for me?

Have been to all, including his steakhouse in Harrah's, except La Provence (though I've heard wonderful things, and I certainly loved it before it was Besh's). I like them all--a lot. They're all different. For elegant upscale dining, August is fantastic, in my view. My husband thought the steakhouse was the best (steakhouse) he'd ever eaten in. But it is super expensive and in the middle of a casino (that combo doesn't work for me). I love the food at Domenica; the pizza is out of this world. For a variety of tasty food, including great fresh seafood, Luke is a great, moderately-priced choice. American Sector is very casual, but good. August and Steakhouse--expensive; Luke and Domenica--moderate; AS @ WWII museum--inexpensive.

Like Bayou Teche, I haven't been to La Provence; it's probably an hour's drive from the city.
If you're hungry for authentic, rustic Italian food on small or large plates, go to Domenica; they also have impressive salumi and formaggi boards that could easily be a meal. Their meats are locally raised & pasture-fed, and the menu changes with the seasons. Really outstanding.
We're also partial to Luke, which has its own line of beers and a hearty choucroute plate that shows off their meats as well.
If you visit the World War II Museum (worth the trip), don't miss Chef's American Sector restaurant - nostalgic, 1940s food presented in a thoroughly modern way. Last time I went they had sweet corn ice cream with the Sector Jacks for dessert. I also love the tomato soup & grilled cheese.
Finally, if you're gonna gamble, Chef Besh has a steakhouse inside Harrah's Casino. I eat healthy in New Orleans, and found plenty of good seafood & salad options there. The ambience is elegant and relaxed.
You're not going to go wrong with any of John Besh's restaurants. He & his chefs are genius.›2 Replies -
Other than La Provence, I've been to all Besh restaurants.....including American Sector in the WWII Museum. All are worthwhile, each offering different menus and atmospheres. August is his flagship and easily the best of the bunch. Though, you can't go wrong with any. I'd classify August as contemporary creole/continental....Luke, Alsatian....Domenica, Italian.....and American Sector, re-imagined diner food. August is "dressy" and the others are more casual.
