Hygge Bakery Downtown
This is a Danish bakery that my new favorite. Hygge is pronounced HUGH-guh (or HEW-guh) by the way.
It’s in the ground floor space of a new condo building downtown on Hope, just south of 11th. It looks like they bought all their stuff at Ikea; and they probably did….. they make passing reference to Ikea on their website.
Croissants are flaky and have the real butter flavor… it’s not margarine. The chocolate croissant has plenty of chocolate inside (as well as drizzled on the top). The chocolate tastes to me like Hershey’s, but I was informed by my valentine that it does NOT taste like Hershey’s.
It’s actually more chocolate than I prefer, but my valentine loved it.
The 3-grain bread has an impossible crust: crunchy and firm, but it gives without undue pressure. And the inside is airy and soft, with the grains adding a nice nutty flavor to both the crust and the inside.
The focaccia has tomato sauce and cheese on top like a pizza. It’s soft to the touch and bite, and not greasy like I’ve had elsewhere. The tomato sauce is full of tomato-ey flavor.
Cookies and sweets are also expertly executed. I love the one where they drizzle the sweet batter right on the baking sheet so you get a lattice-like cookie…. yum.
Their website says they also serve lunch. I’ll have to try that sometime.
Warning: There’s very little seating. I’m not likely to ever eat there.
If this place was more convenient, I’d gain 10 pounds.

Wow, a Danish bakery! Exciting news! Thanks for the review I will definitely go try it immediately! Hygge translates to "cozy" btw, which is very important for Danish culture...we love to create a cozy atmosphere! :)

Sounds like they've hit their stride; I was disappointed but went right when they opened. Next time I can get on a train over there I'll try it again.

I love, love their dark rye bread.
Don't really care for their pastries though as I find them overly sweet. But that bread...
