Teaism is both tasty and budget-friendly and it's right on Lafayette Square.

Around 12th and K, Mayur, at least for lunch - a good Indian style kabab with veggies.
14th and P - Stoney's for a good burger - nothing fancy or special, but a solid choice for the back pocket.
Any more info on you, your background, situation?

It's my first time in Washington, DC, and we're from Rhode Island. We'll be staying for 3 days. We enjoy tex-mex, indian food, a good burger joint or a diner. Any breakfast options are also appreciated.

The weekend buffet at Bombay Club, while not "cheap," is a great value. The room is pretty, the food is delicious and you can get unlimited sparkling wine. I think it's Sunday only, but you might call to see if it's offered on Saturdays. If you like Indian food, the brunch is a lot of fun.

For us, I'd define that as a meal for two under $40.

The Happy Hour 3/$20 deal at The Source is proving to be a great deal with great food. Here's the Chow thread;

Central- you can eat for under $20 pp if you navigate the menu carefully. For example, l love the cheeseburger with fries (or salad) for $17. The burger is amazing, with a ginger mayo and potato tuile, perfect fries. It leaves me sated and happy happy!\
Old Ebbitt Grill- a wide selection with an emphasis on a terrific raw bar. Check out the raw bar special. It's late at night, but it makes a total splurge affordable. The restaurant is a DC classic that is fun for tourists and locals alike.
