Japanese regional cuisine in Tokyo
I had an excellent lunch at Oshima (03-3348-8080), the Kaga-ryori restaurant in Shinjuku Halc. The Y3980 Kaga menu was a big multi-course affair that included a lot of specialties of the Ishikawa-ken/ Kanazawa region like jibuni (a nikomi made with duck meat and vegetables) and sweet and crunchy goro tsukudani (tiny river fish). Other highlights were a tofu-like dish made from chestnuts, and an excellent grilled buri with daikon. All in all, lots of interesting and unusual flavors, and everything was prepared very well and presented beautifully. I've had Kaga-ryori around the corner at Tengumai, which is much more rustic and izakaya-style, but this was a whole different level.
The dining room itself is rather dowdy and the service clueless, but I'd definitely go back for the food.
