Dinner Suggestions and Safe Walking to Golden Gate Theater

Any dinner suggestions in walking distance to the Golden Gate Theater? We are taking BART and will likely get off at the Civic Center stop.

IMHO, it's better to get off at Powell St. It's closer, and a much safer (or at least, nicer) walk (basically, only one block of the Tenderloin instead of two). What kind of dinner were you looking for?

I think my selections are going to be limited given the area so I'm looking for moderate price but close to the theater. We love any ethnic cuisine.

I think you may be better off dining around Union Square, then walking to the theater. There is King of Thai Noodle on O'Farrell, or Naan 'n Curry (also on O'Farrell). Both are just a step up from takeaway, but with good food.

We ate at 54 Mint before seeing Fiddler on the Roof, and it's a short walk from there along Market to the theater.

(If you walk around the area of the theatre, be advised, though, my friend parked along 6th Street and said the block-long walk on 6th to Market was the most scared she's ever been, and she's a native San Franciscan, and is not at all fazed by walking around the Mission, so not easily freaked out.)

Did you like the restaurant? Did you go there for dinner? Any recommendations? I'm getting a little nervous on all the descriptions of unsafe walking even along Market. I would imagine though we will be walking with a group after the evening performance.

I think we're saying that walking Market Street after dark isn't for the faint of heart or those unused to urban environments. It's more unsightly and unsettling than unsafe, but the potential for an aggressive panhandler or quick purse snatch is there.

I've looked at Yelp on this restaurant and many complain of slow service. I am a bit concerned when theater is involved. What was your experience w/service?

Re: safety - I've been a Best of Broadway subscriber for years, so go to lots of shows at the the Golden Gate - you'll be fine walking to and from the Powell Street station.

Before shows I've dined at 54 Mint, Chez Papa, Fish and Farm, Sultan, Farmer Brown and Fifth Floor. I'd happily return to any of them, with FIsh and Farm and 54 Mint being my 2 favorites.
I really enjoyed 54 Mint the 2 times I've been there. Before the show we told the waiter we had an 8 pm curtain -and he got us out in plenty of time.

Thank you - I feel better now. I made a rez at 54 Mint and informed them we would be seeing the play.

Well we went to 54 Mint and were unimpressed. Slow service even when we told we had theater committments. We ordered a $12 Caprese salad advertised as heirloom tomatoes and out it came as a regular Safeway produce red tomatoe. We asked the waiter and he admitted it was a regular tomatoe and we asked them to take it back. They said on the menu sparkling water was complimentary and it showed up on the bill. The pasta dishes - one seafood and the other with a sauce with duck in it were very average. Would not recommend - although convenient to theater and interesting decor and area.

Shame on them for even having a tomato salad on the menu in February!
