Chow Police question about typos
I was on a thread on the Home Cooking board where someone was making a size reference. The hound wrote something like "pee sized", which I assume was likely meant to be "pea sized".
My comment, was along the lines "can you better describe 'pee size'. Hehe"
This was deleted.
Another poster said something like "PEE size! Typos are funny!" and that too was deleted.
So here's my question,
Why were the posts deleted? Was it because we were pointing out someone's typo? Was it because it aluded to urine (pee)? A combination? Considered offensive? A curious mind would like to know.

You might want to post this on Site Talk but I'd say it was because it was off topic. If the comment doesn't address cooking/technique itself, it's deleted.

Chowhound strives to be welcoming to all sorts of people, including those for whom English is a second language or English class was a much-hated slog. Comments on the spelling and grammar of other posters will almost always be removed. A very rare exception is made when the spelling error made the meaning of something unclear and the correction was offered in a very friendly manner.

OK, I can understand that... I guess I've been a very rare exception on several occasions - I get people's handle wrong, use the incorrect word, etc etc. What followed was friendly banter: others have poked fun at how the context changed for such a small typo.
I'm not saying these people should have their posts removed, I'm just asking if this is a steadfast rule: spelling error made something unclear AND correction is offered in a very friendly manner.
If someone writes "leak" instead of "leek" (I was eating leak and potaoto soup) I don't think its wholly unclear, the meaning would be quite evident. Not being unclear would make correcting the typo wrong?
I dunno...

We don't see everything, so certainly there are spelling corrections out there that should be removed, and haven't been. But yes, that rule is pretty steadfast -- please don't comment on other people's spelling unless it's necessary to clarify meaning (for example, someone who has spelled a restaurant name wrong and is thus having difficulty finding information about the restaurant) and you can do so in a very friendly way.
Funny little comments don't always feel funny to the person on the receiving end of them, plus, it sets a bad precedent that other posters will latch onto to be meaner. We'd really prefer that people avoid commenting on that sort of thing as much as possible.

One thing though that might be helpful. If I know I caught something that is unintenionally funny within the two hour editing period, I'll comment that they might want to change it while edit is open.
After two hours, whether they made the correction or not, I'll edit my notice by wiping out all my text with 'delete' or just a period.
Note that I won't do this for just spelling or grammer errors, only those that might attract pithy comments by others.
This way it saves the mods from having to delete those bon mots by others and my post negates itself so i don't have to tell the mods to delete it. Hopefully that save work for everyone.
