Birthday meal: simple but quality ingredients, under $30 per person, not spicy

KCMPLS Feb 11, 2010 11:51 AM

We have a birthday coming up and I'm looking for a decent place to eat. While normally we love spicy ethnic foods this time around we are interested in something more basic like good steak, grilled fish, etc, a really good meat and potatoes type of place. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Boy, this challenge is right in the MSP wheelhouse. You can really be pleased all over town, especially at the places already mentioned.

Even the local "darlings" like 112, Bar La Grassa, etc. can accessible at that price range. The trends towards smaller plates, offering half-orders, places offering high-end and burgers on the same menu, are ones that I've really embraced. You get some outstanding food, but aren't limited to a single $25 entree every time.

Beyond the solid recommendations you've received, places like Grand Cafe, the Birchwood, the wine bar at Heartland, and ordering selectively from places like the above would fit the bill.

I love Duplex... nice atmosphere, great food. They have wine & beer specials often, though they're not all listed on their website.

      Here's their menu: http://duplexmpls.com/menu.html

Most entrees are about $15, so it's quite reasonable (and a great deal, since it's all very tasty!)

It's possible that it would push the top of your price range (esp. if drinks are desired and to be included), but the Strip Club definitely fits the bill in terms of your description....

I recently had a wonderful meal at Victory 44 and would definitely suggest it for a wonderful meal. While they have some things that are a little dressed up, my wife had a very good piece of beef accompanied by well prepared pasta. I think the plate was $8.

The Modern would fit the bill perfectly. Simple cuisine with lots of flavor and great ingredients. Entrees are $12-17, so your $30 should cover apps and drinks as well.
