Looking for a DIFFERENT sushi place
All
My fiance and I are looking to try a new sushi place in the city but scanning the boards, we have been to most and the ones we haven't, seem to have mixed reviews.
We have frequently both Yasuda, Gari, and Ushiwakamaru. Went to Jewel Bako and while enjoying the fish, thought the rice was terrible. Been to Sushi Seki , Sushi Samba (if that counts) and countless others. Enjoy none sushi staples such as Sugiyama and Kyo-ya but we are really looking for sushi here.
We are considering 15 east, masa (not thrilled about the price), and any other suggestions the board can provide!
15 East is good, and Masa is spectacular (and of course over the moon expensive). Have you been to Kurumazushi?

You should try Sushi Azabu in Tribeca (it is hidden below a place called, I think, Greenwich Grill)- in the same league for sure as Ushiwakamaru and I actually prefer it. Have you tried Sasabune- also worth checking out.
I don't love 15 East. Karumazushi is also really fantastic.

The rice at sasabune is truly horrendous. Ruins the whole meal for me every time.
maybe sushiman will weigh in here...
Soto is worth a try (haven't been there in a while)
Kurumazushi can get VERY expensive depending on how you order....

I'd try out Sushi Azabu (as autevsky suggests) and Kanoyama (on a non-weekend night, ordering what's really interesting/fresh), both at the sushi bar.

I iike the cooked dishes at Kanoyama, but I don't think the sushi and sashimi are anything to write home about.

What have you ordered there?

Probably everything...I've been there many times. I'm talking about the one in the W. 20s. They have another place too but I haven't been.

This is the place I'm talking about...2nd Avenue and 11th. Never heard of a sister restaurant in the West 20s.

The Today's Specials menu typically has the best stuff.

Are you confusing it with Momoya?

Ugh yes I'm an idiot!!! Kathryn I totally agree about Kanoyama - it's very good indeed at the bar there. I was thinking of Momoya.

Have you tried Aki in the Village? I confess that I am not really a sushi aficionado and Aki is not exactly new, but it is different from the usual place. Worth a try if you haven't been there yet.

I totally agree with you. Aki is AMAZING! It's probably like nothing you've ever had, the chef used to live/work in Jamaica, so he mixes fish with fruit. Sounds kinda odd, but tastes great!

Shimizu on W 51st gets little press here, but has been one of my go to stops for a long time. My other is Yasuda, find level of fish quality similar, but Shimizu usually has less offerings.
