Good selection of Chinese beers?

  • 5

Does Ranch 99 have a good selection of Chinese beers (namely, something other than Tsingtao)? Or are there better places to try?

  1. Well there aren't that many brands that make it over here, really, and the Chinese style of beer is mostly pretty standard anyway. I buy "Harbin" sometimes. There's also "Taiwan Beer". Most of the Chinese markets also carry some Thai and Vietnamese brands like "33", "Tiger", etc.

I think most of those places carry about the same stuff - I think SG Superstore and 168 should both have a pretty good selection. But if you're looking for something that has a stronger / more complex flavor than the standard Budweiser tasting stuff, you might be out of luck.

Very cool. Thanks. I've never actually tried Harbin and am curious. Do most of those places, like Ranch 99, etc. carry it?

It's pretty common, but I don't remember specifically if 99 Ranch carries it. If you go to the 99 Ranch in Focus Plaza, the other places mentioned in this thread are all really close.

Snapped a couple cam-phone pictures for you at SG Superstore (run by Shun Fat).
A few interesting things to note:
          1) Beijing version of Asahi (never heard of / tried this)
          2) Love the bare-bones style cans of Taiwan Beer - reminds me of those BEER cans that used to be at Ralphs or Vons, featured in Repo Man
          3) Also Yanjing beer and a second style of Tsingtao (Qingdao) - "pure draft" (see also http://blogs.laweekly.com/squidink/be..., which features a comparsion of the two Qingdaos, but not any other Chinese beer)

    2. Best selection that I've seen is at Hawaii Supermarket.

In addition to Taiwan Beer, I've also seen Distinctive Flavour Beer and Zhujiang Beer.
