Rudi's European Cuisine Naples
Rudi's has recently opened on 41 in North Naples in the location that was previously Heidleberg Restaurant. Rudi's is yet another place serving German cuisine with a few pastas and steaks thrown in, for those preferring something other than heavy Teutonic cooking.
I have tried most of the German places in town, including Heidleberg, and have found them sadly lacking. My gold standard is always sauerbraten. If a German restaurant can't make a good version, it's a failure in my book. The only good sauerbraten I've had in Naples was cooked by a German friend, until now.
I was dining solo and could only sample a couple items. Cream soup of forest mushrooms was more mushroom than cream , thick with finely diced mushrooms. I liked it. It was $4.85. I also had a taste of their goulash soup, which was terrific. I will order that next time.
PJ, my friendly bartender, was proud to say the sauerbraten is marinated for 5 days and highly recommended it. Of course, I knew I was ordering that before I sat down. Their version is from Swabia and is topped with demi glace made from the red wine and vinegar marinated beef, and is accompanied by apple red cabbage and bread dumplings(knudel). The sauce was richly flavored and exceptionally satisfying. Unfortunately, my beef was a bit dry. I didn't mention this to PJ until after I had finished and he apologized because he has always seen it tender and juicy. I have no doubt I would've had a replacement if I had spoken up sooner. The dumplings were light and the red cabbage had a perfect balance between tart and sweet-less on the sweet side which is a plus in my book. This was priced at $19.85.
They have a pretty good selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass. I will return again to try their schnitzel.

The food there is excellent ... I enjoy it every time I visit them and the owners Rudi and Maria are so lovely!
I've been there yesterday and they told me they' re now open from 4 - 9pm and offering Early Bird menu. ... AND they have FULL BAR now! So you needn't go for some cocktails to another place. I'm so glad! -
Glad to hear Rudi's has re-opened and I see that they are open for lunch but closed Saturday and Sunday, kind of odd but who knows...but have you not tried Jaegerhaus? Quite remarkable from what I've heard; a few co-workers have had dinner there and have loved it. Thanks, RA!
