Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Minneapolis and St. Paul

Great Food + Wireless, either Mpls or St. P?

I'm studying for an exam over the next several months and am looking for places with great food where I can linger with my laptop for an hour or two at a time. I always seem to end up at Dunn Brothers, which is perfectly pleasant, but the food's pretty weak.

Either Minneapolis OR St. Paul would be fine, but no suburbs, please.

Ideas?

  1. Common Roots was my first thought of places in my neck of the woods. I think that Barbette has wireless too.

There was a similar thread in 2007, so the info may be a little out of date: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/379276

Thanks for that 2007 thread. I didn't remember that one at all. It certainly gives me some places to start with.

Common Roots has wifi - but they turn it off during peak hours, so depending on when you are going to study, it might not be the best location. (Sorry, I don't remember what hours it is off - but the cards with the wifi password also list the hours.)

I love Victory 44, and can walk there from my house, but it isn't really a place where you can linger for a couple of hours. They only have about a dozen tables, and I'd feel bad taking one of them to study while they could be serving dinner.

On to a suggestion...When TCL and I need to linger and get stuff done with wifi and a laptop, we usually turn to Psycho Suzi's. The food isn't fantastic, but the patio is lovely, and a lot of their food is really meant for snacking. If you're still studying when the weather gets nice... it is a must visit.

Replying to my own post... the other place TCL and I go to when we need wifi and food is Java Train. The food certainly isn't at the level of Common Roots, but it is pretty good, and the place is always quiet. They've been doing some neat sounding weekend dinners as of late, check their facebook or twitter for the updates - what they serve changes weekly.

I was presuming a daytime visit, perhaps incorrectly. My recommendations wouldn't make much sense in the evening.

Daytime, evening, weekends, weekdays, are all in play for me, but mostly weeknights and weekends.

              Great suggestions all, thank you!

        2. Victory 44 has wireless and great eats, though you might want to wait until the amuse arrives before you crack open your laptop.

moto-i has wireless, a nice working atmosphere, and good eats.

The Longfellow grill has a so-so working atmosphere, but is pretty friendly about the wireless thing.

According to Urbanspoon, Gangchen has it.

It would be absurd if Midtown Global Market didn't have it.

          1. But you can grab a sandwich at the St Paul Cheese shop or soup and bring it into DB......

I see tons of people with laptops at both coffee news and shish.

            1. Cheeky Monkey had wireless when they first opened, yes?

I haven't seen anyone w/a laptop during the times they switch over to table service (dinners, weekend brunch) but it may still be available when they're doing counter service (weekdays before 4pm).

              1. i really like wilde roast in ne mpls for this type of thing. beware that it can get to be very busy and scene-y sometimes on weekend evenings. sometimes it's hard to get a table.

all of the recs so far on this thread are excellent though.

                1. Birchwood Cafe has wifi and great food. It's a great place for lingering at non-mealtimes (though is crowded during "primetime").

                  1. Amore Coffee has wireless and pretty good sandwiches. They serve soup, too, but I haven't tried it. They are very accommodating to those who linger and work and nibble/drink. I'm a big fan of their Sharbidar (sp?) tea.
