Mia Dona environment?

So Im interested in going to this restaurant, Mia Dona, with a friend next Friday for an early dinner. From what I've read about it thus far, I'm willing to give it a shot, and the general price range works for me as well. My only concern is that I've read some things about the space being a bit cramped, and such. Can anyone give any insight into things like space, noise level, and the overall environment of the place?

Thanks much. Also, if anyone can mention any other restaurants of similar food/quality/price around mid-town, that would be great too.

Thanks much.

  1. I have dined here a few times - both lunch and dinner - and always enjoyed the experience, particularly bc of the atmosphere for a midtown restaurant. I think the space is quite pleasant. Never found it cramped or overly noisy. Good service, and great pasta.

Mia Dona is a place that I've been to many times. It is not crowded at all. I suggest the back room; it is the quietest of them all. However, they have recently changed their menu, and, to my mind, not for the better. If you decide to go, have the meatballs- they are a holdover from the early menu. A very good alternative is Canaletto. It is on 60th Street between 2nd and 3rd. The food is very traditional, reliable and always satisfying. We are going there even more since Mia Dona has changed. They give out complimentary plates of salami, chuncks of parmesan and breadsticks when you sit down. Yum!

Yes, I've heard mixed things about this recent change of menu, but I'll keep those meatballs in mind. As for Canaletto, that seems to be a bit more than I'm looking to pay this time around, but I'll certainly keep that in mind for the future.
