Providence Tasting Menu vs Chef's Menu

Does anybody know what the additional courses usually consist of for the chef's menu? Or is the chef's menu completely different than the tasting menu. The price difference seems significant so was wondering. $160 w wine pairing for tasting menu vs $245 w wine pairing for chef's menu.

I'm going there on Valentines Day for the first time in about 3 years but on the 20th to circumvent the special Valentines Day menu and Valentines Day tax. The last time I was there we had the tasting menu and it was absolutely divine.

    1. Hi js76wisco,

The Chef's Menu is usually totally different from the regular Tasting Menu. I've tried both on various occasions and the Chef's Menu is like an open invitation for Chef Cimarusti to personally craft something for your tastes / preferences (and/or let him cut loose). I definitely prefer the Chef's Menu's creations over their regular Tasting Menu.

Ok thanks. I downloaded both menus from the website and it looked like there were a couple of similar dishes on both menus but subtle differences and lots of truffles added which can't be bad.

I counted 5 extra courses (2 of which were desserts) and one extra protein. I'll probably go with the chef's menu.

              Hi js76wisco,

Also the website menu for the Chef's Tasting Menu is only an example. When you make your reservation feel free to let Providence know if you have any requests (perhaps you want Scallops or Lobster, etc.). One Chowhounder requested Chef Cimarusti create an *entire* Chef's Tasting Menu with Foie Gras incorporated into each course(!).

I once requested Chef Cimarusti to recreate his Iron Chef Tasting Menu, etc. Just some ideas. :) Otherwise he'll create something that inspires him that night. Enjoy~
