The Stage, Keene NH, very disappointing

Though I hate to pan a restaurant based on only one visit, I must report that breakfast at The Stage in Keene, NH was really disappointing. Starting with the coffee, a limp excuse -- you can get more flavorful coffee at any gas station. I ordered the "homemade" corned beef hash which they adulterated with red and green peppers and perhaps other unidentified additions. To the side was a mush of potatoes/onions/paprika...why has this soggy conglomeration taken over our breakfasts plates, people. If I'm going to eat fried carbs, I want them crisp. Where are the lovely crisp hash browns (not frozen) of yesterday? The poached eggs, however, were fine...an indication that perhaps there was some real food back there. My husband ordered the huevos rancheros...not a tortilla in sight either under the fried eggs or in a separate basket or anything. The beans/salsa/sour cream combo was cold. It seems there plenty of other breakfast joints in Keene. I was amazed that there was a line waiting to get in as we left...perhaps they were all first timers, too. Or perhaps I came on an off day, or ordered the wrong thing. I won't darken their door again.

Thanks for the heads up, I think we'll skip it. Every now and then we head into Keene for breakfast. So far we liked Lindy's for basic diner fare and super cheap too.

Do you have any other breakfast recs?

As a resident of the Keene area I would have to say that this visit was probably an outlier. The Stage is a favorite for brunch, and just getting in there around 10am can be a chore because of the large crowd.

I tend to ask about how a dish is prepared if I have any doubts, and read the menu carefully. For example, their huevos rancheros doesn't claim to have tortillas with it.

Thanks for your input, jbergeron, It wouldn't occur to me to ask if huevos rancheros have tortillas (it is usually underneath the eggs) anymore than I would ask if tacos have tortillas or chicken pot pie has a crust...perhaps I should be more inquisitive of my server...I appreciate the tip. I do have another question though, have you been to that pancake place that is just south of Walpole on rte 12? We just zipped by and it looks like it is only open on weekends. Worth the trip?

As a long time resident of Keene up until 3 years ago I find the Bloody Mary the high point of the Stage's breakfast. I can spend 1/2 the $ and go to Timoleons and get the same, if not better, breakfast. Or drive 10 minutes and go to Audrey's (I think it is still open) in Marlborough NH.

Lindy's Diner is good for breakfast as is Chelsea Royal Diner in West Brattleboro, VT if you are out that way. Burdicks in Walpole has a n upscale Sunday brunch.
