Good times at Avenue Happy Hour, Long Branch NJ

joonjoon Feb 8, 2010 09:17 AM

So I know everyone here loves to hate Avenue, but I couldn't pass up their Friday night all night happy hour deal.

5$ Martinis, 1.50 oysters, 75c clams, and half price bar menu.

The cocktails we had were uniformly excellent, and the bartender, Jason was friendly and there for us whenever we needed him.

On to the food - we started with some oysters (fantastic!) and clams (good). We followed it up with their steak tartare (yum!), then mussels (tasty) and fries (pretty good but a little on the soggy side).

The best thing I had was their cheese plate - 5 cheeses presented with 5 different pairings. Loved it!

I'll be heading back to Avenue for their 29$ pre-fix. Hopefully Avenue will continue to impress.

By martini's do you mean Gin and Vermouth or just chilled vodka or apple pucker in a martini glass.

(sorry to be a cocktail snob)..

    ..ok not really.

They make excellent martinis to your order. I think the snob in you will be pleased. The special includes top-shelf liquors. The special applies to anything that's served in a martini-shaped glass.

The oysters have consistently been of high quality and served correctly. Plus they provide mignonette, which I require.

The happy hour is 7 nights a week, not just on Fridays, from 4 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the happy hour lasts all night.

        No problem RPMartiniSnob. ;)

My go-to martini is Sapphire + extra olives. But the bartender made me a Sapphire + some kind of lemon liquor? + sav blanc martini that blew me away.. the last time I had a martini that good I was at Daniel. The martini deal is legit.

In addition, their specialty cocktail menu is all half price, and even though i'm not a big fan of fruity drinks, I really enjoyed them.

I'm glad you had a good time joonjoon. As a respected member of this site I value your opinion highly.

And. for the record, I do not love to hate Avenue. In fact I hate that I hate Avenue. I really wanted a NYC quality place with a view of the shore. I hate that they ruined my anniversary lunch with mediocre food, rude service, and inept management that left me shaking my head wondering what they were thinking.

And, even though I vowed never to go back, your good review just may make me think about giving them another chance.

Seal: I had a similar dining experience at Avenue for the DH's birthday. I resolved to only sip cosmos and eat oysters there and then move on to a yummy dinner elsewhere.

Thanks Seal, but I'd say Chow's got some problems if guys like me are respected! :D

Keep in mind that my experience was based on the happy hour deal - I probably wouldn't be as excited about Avenue if it were full price, and I've never had a sit-down meal there. But I do think their bar is definitely worth a visit for happy hour.
