going out for fish. specific day/days to go/avoid?
i've heard people say things like, "don't do for sushi on a monday, because many restaurants get their fish delivered on tuesdays."
is there any truth to this in toronto? is there a day that's best for going out to eat fish in toronto and a day that's the worst?
I once went to the Danforth for Greek food. Two of the "daily specials" were fish. One was whole red snapper, grilled. I asked the server when the fish came in and she told me Friday. If the fish was delivered to the restaurant on Friday, assume it was plucked from the sea on the Tuesday or Wednesday, which means that Monday's special is going on a week old. This did not sound good to me, so I chose something else.
It's entirely possible that some restaurants are able to get fresh fish on Saturdays or possibly Mondays, but I think Sunday's unlikely, as well as holidays. I'd personally stick to live shellfish on those days, such as oysters, mussels and lobster.
If you want very fresh fish on a Sunday or Monday, I'd suggest visiting a restaurant that has live fish swimming in tanks, like O Mei on Highway 7. I can't say for sure if the fish is farmed or wild, but at least it's alive until moments before it's delivered to your table. You can choose your fish from the tank, so pick a lively looking one!
