Ciao Lavanderia (Olmos park area) or Ciao 2(Stone Oak area) are lovely, fun restaurants in San Antonio. The arugula salad works nicely with the entrees they serve. I recommend the panini or the lasagna, both are served at each location. You must have a dessert. I recommend the Panna Cotta, every time I go I want two of them for myself.
Most of the entrees are predictable, but the restaurant is fun, you can dress up or down, and the desserts are to die for.
The whole vatel family of restaurants is superb, but the others would be too "fancy french"

Something "fun" "with local flavors" certainly describes City Market, a short drive east on I10 in Luling. That's one of the best places on the planet to go for barbecue.
But if you're not familiar with these meat-market-type BBQ joints, you probably need to do a little research. They're not typical restaurants like you're probably accustomed to.
Don't go for dinner. Go for an early lunch.
