New to Sacramento, confused by reports on Mexican & Vietnamese.
Well, I'm not so much confused by the Vietnamese reports, but the go-to place for banh mi was supposed to be "New Paris," and reports are that it has closed, so where would one go now for the best Vietnamese sandwiches?
My girlfriend and I also love good Pho with tasty broth...we can wander around Stockton Blvd, but does anyone have any specific recommendations?
Also, one thing I can't seem to find are "broken rice" dishes. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Finally, there was one dish I used to get called "shaking beef," but I don't know what it is actually called in Vietnamese.
For Mexican, we read on here that the taco trucks were banned from Sacramento, but read somewhere else that some of the taco trucks have been "grandfathered" in and will be allowed to run for another 5 years. Is this true? Where can we find the incredibly tasty tacos we've bought walking down the street in Mexico...does it exist any longer in Sacramento?
Also, is there a place that does real good Al Pastor in Sac?
We're living near Sacramento State now, but will travel to find the food we love.
Thanks!
I like the bahn mi sandwiches at Lee's Sandwiches on Power Inn. You can eat inside or drive through the drive-in window and get your sandwiches to take home.

Apparently Lee's Sandwiches is closed? I tried going there and the place is cleared out...

New Paris is indeed gone. Major loss. Lee's is what it is - one more outlet of a ubiquitous chain. Not the best, but not terrible, and they're big, bright, and clean, with lots of variety. Wish I had names, but there are a couple of places in the shopping center on the east side of Stockton Blvd. just south of 48th that do a good job. And the place in the same center as SF Supermarket (Stockton & 65th) is pretty tasty, too.
The only place I've seen Shaking Beef (Bò Lúc Lắc) here in town is Lemon Grass, the best place in town for Viet / Thai food with white tablecloths (and customers).
For pho, I like Hoa Viet. It's not the best ever, but it's pretty good. There's some inconsistency in the broth, but that's the nature of the beast if you're making your own daily. The Stockton Blvd. location tends to have better, fresher herbs and veggies than the other locations, but Broadway may be more conveniently located for you.
For tacos, it's only the city that's banned the trucks. Step across the line into an unincorporated area of the county and you're good to go. Try the truck at El Camino and Ethan. Also, there are some pretty good brick-and-mortar taquerias around. My favorite (heh, heh) is La Favorita. Also be sure to check out Mariscos Mazatlan for ceviche and coctels de mariscos.

I hope Vientianne is still open on Jefferson in West Sac!! Best Viet/Laos/Thai in Sacramento. Get the angel wings and green papaya salad. I should go today in fact! Pho Bac Ho Viet...I love it.
For fantastic pho, Andy Ngyuens on Broadway. You will not miss the meat..I promise you! I am not vegetarian and I absolutely adore that place!! Their Blue Lady tea is sublime!
