Fasnachts

Does anyone know of a bakery around Ocean City that makes those PA Dutch doughnuts on fat Tues? We haven't been able to find them since we left PA 5 years ago.

The correct spelling may help your search: Fastnachts or Fastnachtskuchen.

They spelled it incorrectly - not a big surprise since the page to which the link sends you misspells "occasions". Fastnachtskuchen are made at Lent. Fastnachts means "fast night", in the "eve of Lent" (Shrove Tuesday) sense. They are the last opportunity to have pastry (and use up the ingredients) before giving it up for Lent. Where I grew up, they were not round, but triangular, which I am guessing was symbolic of the Trinity, but maybe it was just so nobody would confuse them with the jelly doughnuts.
