I know it is late for this post but there is a restaurant in Freeport called Blue 42. It is located at 42 Woodcleft Ave. Good, not too expensive and chef is hands on and will make whatever you want.

I was going to suggest Southside too. But, no waiter service. Wait on line, order and pay, find a table, then your number gets called and go get your food. If you need an actual restaurant, the Popei's is good and cheap. 2 locations on LI, Wantagh and Deer Park.

Another vote for Popei's, I had almost forgot about them: cheap, lots of food and very professional wait staff. I used to go to the one in Sayville and pretty sure they're still open.

Just googled and there are more than 2 locations: Smithtown and Coram, Bethpage, and others. I believe they are still all family owned, although 2 branches of the family may have split up.

It would probably be better to put this on the NY State board, and specify what part of Long Island. It's fairly big. You could also check the old TriState archive.
