German food for take-out?
Hey folks.. Yesterday my Pops brought home some German food from Shoppers World mall. It was from the ex-Brandts, now known as Annette's Fine Foods.. Schnitzel, saurkraut with shredded pork hock, seasoned "home fried" potatoes, perogies with delicious crispy bacon.
It was awesome. I'm sure part of the reason it was so good, is because it's something I *RARELY* eat, other than when I'm visiting the grandparents in Kitchener. Every day seems to be the same old stuff... shawarmas, a hamburger, grilled chicken is all you can find everywhere you look. But not German food
Highly underrated, and highly tasty.. It's all I've been thinking about today, LOL
I already have plans to go back to Annette's for more take-out, but I'm all ears if anybody else has a personal favorite.. would like to compare to Annette's, and variety is always good
Thanks in advance for any tips!
cheers!
PS: this new "Manage your links" at the bottom really sucks. If the restaurant isn't in the database, theres no option to add a new one or anything

You don't say you are in Downtown TO or whatever... but as a child of a German-born father brought up in Burlington where there is a Denninger's store, and the Germania Club restaurant in Hamilton, I never had trouble getting good authentic German food.
I live in Downtown T.O, and, short of the potential of Roncesvalles Village, I don't know of any full-on German restaurants downtown... but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Schnitzel Queen at Queen and Sherbourne: there is a line up there at lunch (they are not open for dinner and not open on weekends). If you give it a chance, you can get a deep-fried schnitzel with German potato salad and sauerkraut (sweet & tangy) for $8.
I found myself done in by their schnitzel sandwiches: a bit too oily with a creamy sauce... it's really rich an possibly enough for two... but the dinner (the same food, just not on a bun) was, as they say, wunderbar.

There is always the Musket, have you tried it? I haven't been in about 8 years but liked the pork hocks. http://www.musketrestaurant.com/

re: Kagemusha
Annette's used to be a Brandts. Which location are you referring to? They have a hot table?
Yuck @ Shoppers World I agree but Annette's is great.. once you see the place you'll know its exactly the kind of place there should be so much more of... deli meats (not a huge variety, but theyer good), sausage, a HUGE imported european candy & chocolate section.. really unique, especially for a place like Shoppers World
Bunch of weird Mentos varieties there, I bought a Yogurt & Strawberry, theres not even English on the wrapper I don't think.. sounds good ;D

Jeesh, yes, they have a hot table! Brandt serves a killer HDL Heaven lunch Wed-Sat at their plant/ factory store. Great selection of fresh and processed meats, along with tons of Mittel Europe groceries. If you like this stuff, Brandt is THE place in the far west GTA. Just head south of Dundas W on Wharton Way(Dixie+Dundas area).
