Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Quiet Restaurant on East Side

We're taking my grandpa out for for his 89th birthday. He and my grandmother are mostly limited to plain foods (roast chicken and grilled fish are favorites), though the rest of the family are foodies.

He's coming in from Brooklyn, so I'm looking for a place preferably on the East Side south of about 80th. Places we eat a lot are Petaluma on 73rd, Brasserie on 53rd, a quiet table (if we can find it) at Atlantic Grill on 73rd. We also recently ate at Olives down near Union Square, which is on the West Side and generally loud, but we had a nice quiet corner and my grandparents really enjoyed the meal.

So the food should fall into the category of French Bistro, Italian, or American. It should also not be more than $30-40 a person for dinner, $20-30 for lunch. More expensive restaurants with prix fixe options that fit into that budget are fine.

Any suggestions?

    1. We have been going to La Petite Auberge, on Lex, b/t 27th & 28th Sts., with some regularity since they opened more than 30 years ago. The French bistro fare is consistently well-prepared and very tasty. There's a very good wine list. Service is pleasant and efficient. The charming interior has the look of a little inn in Britanny. In addition to the a la carte menu, they offer a 4-course dinner prix fixe for $28.50. At lunch, there's a 3-course prix fixe for $19.95.

When you go to the website it says on top UpdateD 10-7-2008. That is never a good sign. Wonder the last time the menu was updated 1956?

LPA's menu of traditional French bistro dishes has been the same for as long as I can remember. They do offer specials each evening some of which may be seasonal. But those of us who go to LPA do so because we enjoy having these bistro classics. If you're looking for the latest "au courant" menu, a hip crowd, and loud, pulsing music, LPA is definitely not for you.!

            2. La Mangeoire. a lovely French restaurant on 2nd Ave near 53rd St, had a $28 prix fixe dinner and a $20 prix fixe lunch. The food is traditional Provencal, and the decor is delightful. It would be perfect for your occasion and would accomodate everybody's needs.

                1. Try Apiary for the $35 prix fix. The roast chicken is the greatest!

Apiary gets insanely noisy when it is busy.

I guess I went on a quieter night - sorry!
