Dried Pigeon Peas in Seattle?

I'm starting to dig into Puerto Rican food and can only find canned pigeon peas, not dried. I think the canned ones get a bit mushy in Arroz con Gandules, so I'd like to find dried ones. I've checked Big John's PFI, Oak Tree Market, Central Market, Madision Market, Fred Meyer and several QFCs with no luck.

I know Goya distributes them because you see them in every supermarket in the NYC area. I'll probably bring some back with me the next time I go to New York but I'd love to find a local supply.

BTW, thanks to the PNW board, I was able to find culantro for my sofrito.

  1. I don't know if this would work for borriqua cooking, but in Indian cusisine, split pigeon peas are known as "toor dal" or "toovar dal", and I purchased these in dried form from Apna Bazaar, an Indian grocery in Bellevue.

      I purchased a large bag of them at the Halal market on the corner of 24th and Union in the Central District (sorry, can't remember the name of the store). I'd check Indian markets near you, as well as some of the small African markets sprinkled all over the CD. Good luck!

        Thanks. I'm not sure that split pigeon peas would work because they're skinned and more likely to mush up.

            I did. They have canned pigeon peas, not dried. In fact they're the ones who suggested that Madison Market might have them. FWIW, in addition to the stores listed in my original post, I also checked Metropolitan Market and PCC.

      3. FOUND! I went back to HT Oaktree Market for some brown rice and decided to have another look at the Goya section, and there they were. I'm sure they weren't there two weeks ago. I just wish I didn't need to hit three+ stores to shop for Puerto Rican ingredients.
