Is there any good news near Brookline?

WilderPenfield Feb 3, 2010 04:05 PM

So, we're getting a Kelly's and a Friendly's, Khayam isn't too exiciting, and Dorado still needs to get new tortillas. It's the middle of winter and we need some good culinary news about the neighborhood... has anyone heard of anything new and interesting on the horizon, other than Sichuan Gourmet coming to St. Mary's?

Temptations coming to Coolidge Corner will be a nice addition - breakfast and lunch.

desparate for a new breakfast place. Zaftig's is erratic and expensive (the last time I ate here the corned beef hash was so bad I had to send it back - cat food and raw potato)and Family, while good enough and fairly priced, is not a warm morning environment. Hope Temptations provides the spot!

I'm so happy about a new breakfast place - a true gaping hole in Coolidge... I sometimes head over to the Family Restaurant but I wouldn't mind having a place to walk to in the AM.

What about breakfast at Martin's Coffee Shop? Not Coolidge Corner, but similar distance to Brookline Family. While it's more of a lunch counter, it's cozier than Brookline Family.

I'm a bit out of the loop, so excuse me if this has been asked in another thread, but where will Temptations be going in?

Beacon Street in Coolidge Corner, at or near where the Bowl & Board used to be.

Great - that space needs new businesses. Thanks!

Do I dare ask where are Kelly's and Friendly's are going to be?

Kelly's will be in Allston at the corner of Comm Ave and Harvard, where Marty's used to be.

I don't know - I noticed a big for lease sign as gone up on that space.

It's a big space, Kelly's may not have taken all of it. I seem to recall a sign a while back saying something like "xxxx s.f. still available."

Or maybe the deal fell through?

No, the most recent sign I saw said the same thing, "X amount of space still available."

Barmy and I walked past yesterday (on our way home from what turned out to be a very unfortunate lunch at Bagel Rising - I would hope that the proprietors meant their name to suggest yeast, not...what actually happened, which most likely had to do with bad lox than the bagel itself.)

The sign says "1000 to 2000 sq. ft. still available" and there's work going on inside. A wall has been built to separate the Harvard Avenue stretch of the space from the rear section where the main part of the wines used to be, and there's a separate entrance on Commonwealth which would accommodate another business in that space. Also, the windows along Harvard Ave. have been papered over, suggesting that there's active construction underway in that part of the space. Still no "Coming Soon!" signs or anything, though.

I'm not 100% certain but I was told that Friendly's would be occupying the old Qdoba spot on the corner of Harvard and Green.

Friendly's will be at the corner of Harvard and Green in Coolidge, the former Quedoba.

As for other breakfast options, I know that breakfasts are served at the Courtyard by Marriot on weekends and possibly during the week also.

I remember the Holiday Inn also used to serve breakfast. Do they still?

Yes the Holiday Inn does serve breakfast! I was just there. The buffet and omelettes are soooo good. They are open till 11am weekdays and 12noon on weekends. great cheap breakfast!

I'm quite surprised that Friendly's is opening a store there. It seems like over the past few years they've been closing stores left and right....
