Indian Grocery: Patel Bros. VS Waltham India

After spending several hundred dollars on Indian take out from along Moody Street in Waltham (Little India is the winner, esp the goat curry)-- it's time to actually start cooking it ourselves. There seem to be a couple of options for shopping in Waltham for ingredients....but I've been to neither of these places (driven by and read a few reviews on Yelp).

Any suggestions? Preferences?

Waltham India is a much more impressive place than Patel Bros. I shopped at both recently and I much preferred the much larger two-level Waltham India.

Note that this thread is about a year and a half old: Waltham India was a relatively tiny little bodega compared to Patel Bros until they moved into the new space. I think they shred Patel Brothers now, in quality, variety and price. I really don't shop for Indian anywhere else anymore.

Patel Brothers (a national chain based in Chicago) has the largest stock of the Moody Street Indian grocers, but they're all about equal in terms of price and quality. We shop at all of them, according to whim and/or which is least crowded at the moment.

Yeah I'd say the strongest factor is whether you have any desire to support locally -owned business, in which case go for Waltham India Grocery. Patel Bros. is a bit more thorough and clearly laid out but neither is clearly better than the other. You might want to hit both and compare the produce availability on any given day.

Both are good (as is New Apna Bazaar), and prices are similar. I usually go to Patel Bros since they carry the largest selection of produce, the lines move quickly, and they often have Dokla on Friday afternoons.

          Screw pine?
          Who has it?
Excellent for Malaysian style beef curry and other foods.

you can get frozen pandan leaf at the big asian supermarkets e.g. super 88/hong kong market (or at least you could before things really went downhill)...
