My Barcelona list needs help

w
WileysHungryAgain Feb 1, 2010 09:33 AM

It's been years since I last was in Barcelona, and now I'll be returning several times in the next 8 months or so.

I have spent countless hours gleaning information from food & travel magazines, blogs, books & websites (especially Chowhound) to the point where I have lost my all bearings as to what is good, bad or otherwise. I’ve read so much literature, that I’m no longer sure whether some of these restaurants are in Barcelona, or that they’re even restaurants at all for that matter.

I know there are no definitive’s when it comes to opinions on restaurants, and I was hoping not to start a whole debate as to what is what, when and where... If possible.

Having said that, would some kind, wise and knowledgeable hound, edit this list into some classifications, such as:

Hi end / Low End
Sit down / Stand up
Tapas
Seafood etc
Specialties
Too touristy (ex: Cal Pep)
Over hyped (ex: Cal Pep)

Feel free to recommendations your faves, as I have undoubtedly omitted many.

To make some sense out of of your list, you will need to do some preliminary homework. First, get an idea of what the Barcelona dining scene is all about; also get a sense of what Spanish/Catalan food is about. Don't need to get into too much depth but a guide book such as Time Out would make a good start. After that, consider your budget, type of food, ambience, that interest you and the amount of time you will be in Barcelona, how far are you willing to venture outside the main central area, etc. Then make a list of restaurant types:
    pintxos
    tapas
molecular cooking (there is no low end therefore, expect to spend)
good moderate to expensive traditional Catalan places
seafood only restaurant (other than expensive, no worth going)
    everyday simple Catalan/Spanish food
fun and "in" and not necessary for great food
I left out international and fusion for simplification. Put restaurants and places that might interest you in the above categories. Then come back to this board and other sites to read about those that you are considering. Don't just read if a place is good but read why it is good and if it is worth your money and time. Always ask yourself, what is the reason that I am considering this place. Also don't take one person's opinion and recommednations, no matter how informed you might think he or she is. That person have a personal preference that might be totally different then yours. Just plan for your first trip and not beyond. For example, if you are going to be in Barcelona for 3 days, you don't need too many places, therefore, get your list down to something manageable. You current post would just overwhelm the board. It is a jumbo of restaurants, chef names, towns, abbreviations that makes no sense, etc.

Thanks Quimbimbo - please do take this list with you, and let me know what you find in your travels.

I'm sorry my list confounded you PBSF, but that's what I warned. Perhaps another Chowhounder is up to the task. I don't need to offend but, If this we're my town ( Los Angeles) I could sort that name in about 15 minutes. I'm not so much looking for opinions as much as just making sense if this list. And cost is not a factor in this list.

So... anybody interested? Thanks & let me know when you're coming to Los Angeles.

If a name makes no sense, just delete it. If the restaurant isn't in Barcelona, delete it. If there's a Chefs name in the list, and he has a restaurant that's worth while, maybe you could add it. I just need these name sorted into a few broad groups such as...

High Brow - Maybe sorted into Molecular gastronomy and other.

Low Brow - Tapas, Bodega, Mercado

Even if that is what you warned, it is very difficult to make sense of your list, and sense is what you say you want.
Like PBSF i go to Barcelona often and love food and know many of the places you listed, but not all, and do not agree that it takes a local only 15 minutes to sort out your list of 60 entries of indiscriminate nature.
If you want sorting done on your list of 60 things, a job that you estimate to be 15 minutes, I m sure your web research will be just as good and efficient as ours.

Out of your list I've been to 2, Drolma and Alkimia on our first trip to Barcelona a few years ago. Both excellent & high brow. I had the baby goat so tender the meat fell of the bones. The food in Alkimia was very good as was the service, however at the time of our visit I found the restaurant and its decor clinical and stuffy. As were the diners.

Our latest favorites are Ca L Isidre: http://www.calisidre.com/calisidre_en.html

      and Passadis del Pep: http://www.passadis.com

I'll be going the end of March and with your list I'll have a lot of research to do. Perhaps even finding a new fave.

      Enjoy yor trip.
