Sushi from Ojai to the Central Coast
Birthday this week. Looking for a sushi lunch, preferably a traditional Japanese style restaurant. I am not into the fancy rolls. I live in Ojai and am willing to travel up to a couple of hours for delicious sushi. Great sushi in Santa Barbara is probably ideal. I am aware of Atari-ya in Santa Maria, but I am wondering if I can do just as well closer to Ojai. (I know, there is always LA)

There is a place called Sushi Hamada/Tokyo Style Sushi on Channel Islands Boulevard in Port Hueneme that is truly wonderful. The chef is an old bud of Nobu Matsuhisa. He has very high standards for selecting the freshest fish. This is not a sexy joint like Nobu--it's a very simple setting, but the fish and food is delicious. Listen to him, he will teach you how to eat sushi properly. He's very strict! But these are important things to learn at the knee of such a master.

just a note to say that Atari-Ya has a sushi happy hour every day (closed Mon) with prices about 40% off menu; most non-specialty rolls and nigiri sushi (not sashimi). From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Special holidays excluded (New Year's, anniversary, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, etc) I'd say prices are rolled back to the early 90's pricing. Food only, not drinks.
