Roman Inn Pizza in Gettysburg

We've been trying out different restaurants in the Gettysburg/Emmitsburg area every weekend during the ski season but missed this little place for too long. If anyone follows the DC area board, I've been on a quest to find great pizza in NoVa but haven't found anything like NY pizza with thin, tasty crust and great toppings and have taken to making it myself. We tried Roman Inn this past Saturday, and I've finally found the pizza I've been looking for--with the perfect crust (thin, chewy and crispy, tasty--far better than what I've made at home) and great toppings. There isn't a wide variety on the menu, pizza (and pizza based derivatives, stromboli, etc.), subs. They make their own roast beef in house and is also excellent. Our friends got subs, meatball and sausage and loved them but nothing compared to the pizza. We were talking to the owner who said he grew up in NY, lived in NJ for years and opened this restaurant in Gettysburg three years ago. Not fancy, not many places to sit but definitely the place to go if you're just looking for great pizza or a simple meal. Oh, no alcohol, or beer that my husband noticed, but check out the selection of sodas/lemonades--nice selection of unusual brands.

    1. If they have any Poppers or Roman Candles you'd be wise to get some of each. The Poppers are a jalapeno, cheese, and a slice of pepperoni wrapped in their dough (served with a side of sauce) and the Roman Candle is a hot dog with pepper jack cheese wrapped in the dough. When we've gone there late night after the bars close we've been known to buy them out of whatever they have left. Dangerously good!

Those sound great-I'll definitely give them a try next weekend!

We gave both the poppers and roman candles a try this past weekend. They were both really good. The pepperoni poppers were a big hit with the right amount of spiciness. The hot dog was less spicy but great for the kids, especially with the pizza dough. The last time we went, we ate in; this time, we did delivery. Like all pizzas, it suffers some from delivery but is still better than most pizzas we get fresh out of the oven. Next time, we'll have it there. The one problem is that we wanted pizza and beer and I don't remember seeing alcohol there. The selection of drinks they have are nice, different, but just not beer.

Thanks for the Roman Candle update. I was very tempted to try one in my late night stop last November, but settled on a slice instread. Next time I'm in town . . .
