President's Day/Mardi Gras Party

So--I'm overseas and am planning a casual get together with 4-5 families (12 adults/15 kids) during the President's Day/Mardi Gras weekend.

Any ideas for the menu?

We'd like some kid-friendly items (some families have extremely picky eaters) as well as some crowd pleasers. One must have is to include a pork dish of some-sort--we did lechon asado all day on the grill for Christmas dinner and it was a hit.

Shrimp and grits also came to mind--but I'd rather not spend a lot of time after the guests get here in the kitchen as it's pretty hot and humid and not the best place for everyone to gather. I don't mind cooking all day and doing a lot of prep--but don't want to be scrambling around at the last minute.

Thanks for the help!

You leave out some specifics, like is this for dinner, lunch? Do you have access to a grill or bbq? Or do you have a slow cooker? And access to produce?

Depending on those answers, you could do a pulled pork for sandwiches, either on a bbq or in a slow cooker, or oven. Or if it needs to be a little fancier, a pork loin roast is easy and good sliced thin at room temp.

Oven fried chicken would work well for those who are picky or have kids that only like nuggets.

Beef brisket is also very good and feeds a crowd, on the bbq or oven. Just start it in the am.
