Pann's - Last Night

  • 8

Another comfort food home run at Pann's. Wings and waffle for wife (g) and medium rare patty melt (my attempt at healthier eating was my side of steamed spinach!) with a chocolate brownie shake for a combo dessert / beverage (my attempt at undoing any healthy eating aspects).

And we felt well protected from a "Heavenly" perspective as we had Cardinal Roger Mahoney and a fellow priest (undoubtedly his aide / assistant / secretary) in the house too (I almost said grace before digging in).

I love Pann's. From the service to the food to the sound track (lots of Everly Brothers harmony last night) to the architecture to the feeling of eating alongside a true cross section of the citizenry of Los Angeles.

There really is no place quite like Pann's.

  1. Agree...I also went last night for a medium rare patty melt with extra grilled onions and a slice of Sock it to Me cake!...no attempt at being healthy! The sad part of it all is that SoCal, not too many years ago, used to have quite a few places like this...such as Ship's (oh how I miss the Ship Shape Burger!!) and the original Dolores...and even DuPars when they were good in the good ol' days!!

What time were you there? We came in about 7:40 or so. Did you see the Cardinal? I even had a free Sock it to Me Cake coupon which I (like the dummy I am) left at home! Dammit (whoops - sorry your eminence!).... ;-D>

It was later...maybe 8:30ish...and it was packed...we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated!...and, no, I did not see the Cardinal...but since I travel to Rome on a regular basis for business, I see too many of them there :-)... I forgot to say that Mrs. TravelPath and I also split a peanut butter shake...maybe I need to go to confession!

    2. Hi Servorg,

Darn you for posting this (and for me reading it early in the morning). I'm salivating thinking about Pann's now. :) I need to go back real soon.

You should talk (about making other people hungry via tantalizing food descriptions)... ;-D>

      2. This is very funny. It was I think two years ago last night - maybe three? - that I hosted a meetup at Pann's on my birthday. So here was an unplanned almost-meetup, again on 1/30, and even the Cardinal came! Dang, wish I coulda made it!

I will soon, though - you guys have me going too!

You just made me recall that I had the split pea soup to start...good stuff (stick to your ribs soup for sure). Going to Pann's soon? A cardinal idea... ;-D>

I'm a pretty good cook, but I've worked my a$$ off trying to duplicate that pea soup. And pea soup is one of my favorite things to make! It's not always the same at Pann's - sometimes it's plain and unadorned, sometimes there are chunks of carrot and stuff, but it ALWAYS has that earthy, deep pea flavor. So I guess I'll just have to keep trying it there. It's my chosen burden... ;-)
