Norman Rose Tavern 01/29/10
This is new gastropub in Napa. We met a friend here last night for dinner. It was really crowded and there was a long wait. This is not really my favorite style of cuisine (I had originally suggested Ubuntu, which is kind of the antithesis of this place), but the food was excellent and the atmosphere was casual and spirited and our waitress was super nice. The wine selection was very good and there was an extensive and eclectic selection of wines by the glass.
Here is what we ate:
Cheetos sliders: Ground cheetos are mixed into the ground beef. The mini-burgers are moist and flavorful and the cheetos add a very interesting corn flavor to the meat.
Crab dip served with toasted baguette slices. Very savory and tasty.
Cheeseburger with grilled onions and bacon. I am usually disappointed with burgers because they often are mediocre and bland. But the Rose Tavern cheeseburger was the best burger I remember eating in the last 10 years. The burger itself was very moist and flavorful. The bacon was high quality, thick cut and smokey. It was really excellent. I haven’t been to Taylors in Napa (supposed to have great burgers) but my partner said the Rose Tavern burger was much better than Taylor’s burgers.
Truffle fries. I have had truffle fries at other places and they have never impressed me. But these were excellent. Much better than I expected. Not greasy or heavy, great potato flavor, with the perfect amount of truffle and parmesan flavor.
Our friend had the Rose house special salad and really enjoyed it.
Although not my favorite style of cuisine, I really enjoyed this place much much more than I expected to. If you are in the mood for a really good burger and fries I highly recommend this place.
I am completely intrigued by the Cheetos sliders--- I don't see it on their menu, do you know if that was a special when you were there?
The truffle fries rec.may get me there alone-- I like the ones at Fog City Diner (It's the thing that gets me to go there but I allow my self 1x/year only..!) Thanks for sharing this info!
Thanks for the report. I just read about it and was wondering if anyone on Chowhound tried it.
The burgers use meat from Five Dot Ranch which sells at Oxbow. I've always liked their meats.
Here's a Napa Register article
Dried cherry vanilla bread pudding sounds really good.
