The Perfect Caper Punta Gorda
There's been quite a few mentions of the Perfect Caper and we finally had a chance to see what the hubub is all about. We're in Bonita Springs and my inlaws in North Port and the only fine dining between the 2 was the Turtle Club. Since that had closed we would generally go to Carabba's in Port Charlotte. I was pretty excited when I saw the menu for the Perfect Caper and the pedigree of the chef. We celebrated MsRev's birthday there last night and it's a treasure.
The wine list has some good selections at reasonable prices.
The inlaws started with white aspargus soup garnished with toasted pistachio oil. It had a good flavor but it's consistency was too thin. Lana had crisp pork belly and steamed buns with sweet-sour fennel, hoisin sauce, and ginger green onion dipping sauce. The belly was crisp as could be and was perfect inside the bun. This was not as sweet as I expected and was our star of the evening. I had a chop house salad with a mix of watercress, iceberg, tomato, avocado, bacon & point reyes blue cheese tossed in a caaper and whole grain mustard dressing. It was cool, refreshing, and delicious.
My mother in law had a tile fish special that was perfectly cooked medium rare and very tasty. I don't remember what the sauce was but they did it well. My father in law had pan seared sea scallops, brown butter pan sauce, whipped golden potato, and sauteed spinach.
Again, they scallops were cooked beautifully and it was a fine dish. Lana had duck a deux facons-crispy confit of duck and garlic marinated duck breast, wilted organic greens, with lentil -pancetta vinaigrette, mashed potatoes and thyme jus. The duck was crispy but medium rare and the sides very tasty. Last but not least I had braised rabbit infused with syrah and truffle pappardelle, seasonal mushrooms, and pecorino-romano cheese. A wonderful version of Bugs Bunny!
Dessert was 7 layer chocolate decadent cake which certainly was decadent but not overly rich.
We love this restaurant and wish it was closer to home. It's nice to see Punta Gorda recovering well from their devastating hurricane.
You didn't mention a number of other good things about "Perfect". How about Thurs night live jazz in the bar. Also if you are on a budget there are appetite/entree specials at $20, I'm not on a budget when it comes to very good food -- but the $20 specials leaves room to move up to a nicer bottle of wine. I keep saying next time I'll order from the regular menu, so Mr. Jeanie Roland, who manages the place doesn't think I'm cheap. Maybe next time I will (or not).

The Perfect Caper is known here for the freshness and delivery of its meals. The atmosphere is nice and the service is great. I have been going there for years. Previously they were on Sullivan Street. The chef is one of the best and the meals always show it. They use local grown vegetables when available (organic). Anyone visiting here it a must to try.
