Stuffed Bread ?
I once had a (Italian) bread loaf that was sliced down the bottom and filled with a savory ground (beef) mixture similar to picadillo (NOT sliced deli meat and cheese), tied up and baked.... maybe Mediterranean/French/Italian origin. Any ideas ?

You might want to look at stromboli. Here's a recipe: http://www.fabulousfoods.com/recipes/... but you can also make it with frozen pizza dough. And fillings can be anything you want including something vegetarian with artichoke hearts, pepperoncini, etc.
