While I'm not Persian, I'm pretty familiar with this dish...and the many, many interpretations of it. Are you used to seeing it made with rounds of eggplant, or somewhat homogeneous? With tomato sauce, with browned onions and fresh mint, with walnuts? Can you recall if saffron was involved?
If you google "borani e bademjan," "borani bademjan," or "borani badenjan," you'll find pretty standard variations.
