Cgy Chinatown fire

I have a pretty good view of the fire in Chinatown, and it looks like they're taking the building down.

AFAIK, three restaurants were destroyed in the fire: Bobby Chao's, Thai Bistro, and a shawarma/donair place I don't know the name of (it used to be Damascus Shawarma). I believe there was also a Karaoke bar in the building.

  1. I just flew into Calgary this afternoon on business and was driving to 9th av and 6th st. I was wondering what the burning smell was.

    1. NOOOOOO! Thai Bistro was excellent! So sad!

False alarm! Thai Bistro is in the next building over, so it is probably unaffected by the fire (hopefully no water damage either).

thank goodness! thanks for the news!

My wife claims there were people eating at You&me when she rode the bus past after work. We drove past at around 7:30PM and they had it blocked off due to the investigations.

      2. Bobby Chao's has been gone for a while. Not sure why, me and the 9 other people that liked it a lot couldn't get down town enough to support them I guess.

        1. I don't think Bobby Chao's has been at that location for some time. They moved up to the Edgemont area. Their current address is: #18 - 34 Edgedale Drive NW. I can confirm they did in fact move as I have been to the new location.

I just checked the address for Thai Bistro. It is listed as #102 - 233 Centre St. And U & Me Restaurant is listed as #201- 233 Centre St. So I wonder if U& Me Restaurant is also affected.

This makes joining the site worth while right here. So I presume the food's still good.

The last time I went to Bobby Chao's was a couple of months ago and it was still good. It was very busy though. I would suggest you make reservations before going. Their new location is not very big and but there are quite a few large tables. Luckily I went for an early dinner at around 5:30. By 6:30 the whole place was packed.

              They even have a website:
              http://www.bobbychao.com/

Oh wow! They deliver to my area for free! Wewt! I'm so going to try them.

The food was fantastic the last time i was there (Nov 09). Peking duck is definitely the highlight - i don't think there's a restaurant serving it better than Bobby Chao's...maybe Ginger Beef in the NE, but it's been a while since i've been there.

I think I'm wrong about Thai Bistro. They're in the next building over from the fire.

                  1. re: miss.foodie

U & Me and Thai Bistro are in the building immediately next door, so they are closed for now. Although, other than the scorched wall, the structure of their building looks unaffected but I think they would have suffered some smoke and water damage.

                    1. re: Harju

U&Me is still open when I walked by it last week, I think they opened the side above the optometry place. I'm sad that Thai Bistro is closed for now though, they do have the fantastic Thai Food. Judging from the outside, I agree with previous comments about not major damages, just more on the side near the fire with the scorched wall.

Oops, sorry~ U&Me is closed when I walked by the actual doors today. Too bad~

                  2. Yes Bobby Chao's moved after the last fire at that location. I think it was 1.5 yrs ago when the last fire occurred at that location

                    1. I was watching the Superbowl with someone on the Fire brigade that fought this fire. It hasn't been reported yet, but this was 100% arson. They had unsuccessfully attempted to burn the place down 3 days before. He said there were 3 jerry cans of fuel and a severed gas line to add accelerant to the fire.

Wow, kind of sad. I could write a novel here ranting. I think it's sort of good that the arsonists are so careless as to just leave the evidence. It's good that no one was injured seriously at least.
