BBQ joints along I 45

Hi all. I am planning a summer trip to Dallas and Houston and am doing some advanced scouting. On one of my days I will be driving from Houston to Dallas along I 45 and was wondering if there were some authentic Texas BBQ joints along the way that you could suggest. Please have them as close to the interstate as possible, as this is unknown territory to me. Any along the route would be perfect. Thanks all!!!

  1. We've had many many many threads on this exact same subject which you can research for more information, but I think the general consensus of opinion is: New Zion Missionary Baptist Church and BBQ in Huntsville.

I agree with that. I think people just assume there will be tons of good bbq between Dallas and Houston and I've never found any and only heard good reviews with any consistency for New Zion.

fifthglen - if you get over to Fort Worth - try Fred's Texas Cafe. It's yummy!!! It's not bbq but it's really good.

Do yourself a favor stop by New Zion .

We are headed north mid-April to the car races in Ft Worth so I might do that. What are the options and what are your preferences?

There is lots of good info here, including more information about New Zion.

      2. Last Friday, January 29, I stopped at New Zion BBQ around 6 pm and it had already closed. Their posted hours are Thurs/Fri/Sat, 11 AM - 7 PM. I guess they close early if the BBQ is gone! It is tiny, but easy enough to find, about 1 mile east of I-45. Hope to check it out another time.
