Why does my Bisquick ALWAYS have mites?

Whenever I buy Bisquick, it is fine when I open it but a week or so later the box is infested. My other boxes in the pantry are fine. What gives?

  1. I can't explain why, but recommend transferring the mix to a tight-sealing plastic or glass container. Stick a bay leaf or two down into it - this is said to prevent unwanted critters.

        Wow! I've never had mites in Bisquick, but I do keep bay leaves in the cupboard, like GG suggests.

      2. wow, I have used Bisquik for years for quick pancakes, biscuits & dumplings, and I have never had an infestation. Do you keep the opened box in the pantry? I refrigerate mine once it is open - read that on the box one day, never realized it as my mom always kept it in the cabinet. I also tend to buy the smaller boxes so they do not hang around as long - I do not use that much of it to justify bigger boxes, and I just pick up a couple when they are on sale. Maybe moving it to the fridge or putting it in a ziploc will help keep the mites out?

        1. Slip the box into a large plastic bag OR transfer the contents to a plastic container. Store in the freezer (or even the fridge). No mites - period.

            I don't buy Bisquick anymore but I do keep my flours, stone-ground cornmeal and different kinds of rice in the refrigerator...living in SWFL, the heat & humidity speeds up rancidity, I've found, so keeping these items in fridge helps immensely, plus keeps out the critters.

              I use a ziplock bag and that hasn't helped but will try putting the box in the refrigerator.

          2. Those itty-bitty pantry mites can be incredibly difficult to eliminate. Their favorite sustenance is flour (wheat, rye, semolina - they're not particular) and products made from flour (e.g. pasta). They also like powdered milk, sugar and cereals and you can also find them in cheese and dried fruit. Contrary to what some might think, pantry mites are not necessarily an indication of poor housekeeping. Mites like dark, warm, moist environments and your kitchen is perfect for their life style. Quite often, they get started with colonization by being transported into your kitchen as hitch-hikers on something you purchase or obtained from some other source, most notably produces you purchase at the super market. One way to regain control of your kitchen would be to tightly seal anything that might attract them in plastic containers and, if possible, store the containers in the refrigerator or freezer. But to eliminate them entirely is likely to require a substantial length of time until you've identified and eliminated every possible source of food for them. They'll even take up residence in potholders that might have a bit of flour dust in them, dust from flour or flour products in your pantry, or potholders filled with seeds, beans, etc.

              Place it in the freezer as soon as you get it home. That will kill the eggs of any insects that inevitably inhabit flour products that you buy.

                We had an infestation of flour weevils once. The exterminator tol us to freeze any flour-like product we had for a day or so. The cold would kill the little suckers. I store most flours either in the freezer or in plastic containers but I admit that I still leave the Bisquick in the box. It's annoying, but freezing everything briefly will work.

I had the same problem with some flour I once bought at Sam's club..I once spoke to an exterminator who told me that the infestation usually starts at the warehouse that grain products are stored in before ending up on the store shelves. Beatles, mites, and other grain insects infestate where those things are kept, especially in warm buildings for long periods of time..so by the time you get them, there may be eggs waiting to hatch and you know the end of the story.

              Because I live in a humid location, I keep my grains, including cornmeal, rice, pancake mix, uncooked pasta, etc in the freezer. Are you buying Bisquick at the same store? If so, I wouldn't buy any more from that location. Also, once they are in one item, you need to check all of your other grains and dried beans because they may also be infected
