Paul Martin's American Bistro in Manhattan Beach--Yay or Nay?

Has anyone been lately? Can we have an early dinner with six older people, mixed but relatively plain tastes? I hear that they accommodate special diets which is attractive. Looking for a round table and early dinner, maybe 5 pm?

I have to respectfully disagree with the other hounds. Doesn't even come close to Houston's which is consistently excellent service and delicious well prepared dishes. Dinner at 5:30 last night for a Valentine's celebration felt like dining at a Denny's. Despite having made a reservation on Open Table, they first try to seat us a table directly next to the bar eventhough the restaurant was virtually empty. We request the empty booth and are told it's reserved so we are then given a table near the entrance where you cannot place your feet under and it's rocking and has to be fixed. Very uncomfortable setting. The hostess in her very casual dress, i.e. jeans certainly didn't help to give a good first impression of anything special about the dining experience to come. They brought my hubbie's salad out before our appetizer came out. I had the fish which was well prepared, but the pancetta added was like shoe leather. My hubbie's prime rib was drowning in a plate of salty au jus and the horseradish sauce was watery and lacked any punch. Service was lacking and we had to ask the busboy several times for share plates. Won't be going back anytime soon.

This is honestly my favorite restaurant for any occasion. The food is outstanding and fairly priced and the service is always fantastic. I don't think they have round tables but the booths along the back wall are really cool. They do get a busy happy hour crowd from all the offices near by but it is really easy to book a table on their webpage.
My wife and I usually share a meal because we love the apps. so much. Drinks and desert are also really good.

I have been here several times and would still like to return to keep exploring the menu. There are simple selections and some a bit more creative. The food is all very local and sustainability focused. They have a nice selection of wines too.

I also liked it. Very much like Houston's in type of menu and pricing. Very good service.

I enjoy Paul Martin's. The food is well-prepared and reasonably oriced [3 course prime rib special Fridays and Saturdays for $28.95 (and the prime rib is better than the roast beef served at Fleming's down the street) and 3 course fried chicken dinner on Sundays for $21.95], nice selection of wines by the glass and friendly service. It can get noisy later in the evening but I have never had a a problem conversing. Not sure there are any round tables though.
