Green Fairy or other Absinthe cocktail

  • 7

I will be in NOLA soon and am hoping to find a bar that serves handcrafted classic cocktails; ideally one that serves real Absinthe. I'm looking for a reserved, grown-up atmosphere, not a party spot. Ideas? I'm staying in the Quarter and won't have a car.

  1. What you want is Cure, but that's Uptown.

The bartender at restaurant Iris is top notch. That's in the quarter. I would guess he has absinthe. In fact, I'd be surprised if he didn't.

    1. pirates alley cafe specialized in absinthe and rum.....

        1. Pirate's Alley has sadly decided to become a full-fledged pirate theme bar, and all the best bartenders are leaving in protest. Sad -- it's such a great location.
Pravda is pretty inside, but more hipster than swanky, and will be inventive with your absinthe drink. If absinthe is behind the bar at French 75, I would leave the choice of concoction in the bartender's hands.

          1. For hand-crafted classic cocktails, I recommend Bar Uncommon. It' s on Common, next to MiLa, just a couple of blocks from the quarter in the CBD. Chris McMillian is the bartender (he's off on Sundays and Mondays, though). I didn't order absinthe; I was drinking the very best Sazerac I had in NOLA instead (and I think it had herbsaint verses absinthe); but I'd be very surprised if he didn't stock absinthe.

            1. Bar Tonique is what you want, 800 block of N. Rampart. same owners as delachaise, mixologists, nice menu of hand-crafted cocktails, good selection of bourbons and tequillas. classy place.

stop by Meauxbar Bistro down the block for dinner afterward

              1. I say definitely go to Pravda! It's in the Lower Quarter on Decatur Street. They are right when they say the atmosphere is a little more hipster than swanky, but I promise but there won't be frat boys throwing up on your shoes or some bimbo lifting her shirt and you will get very good absinthe, served with proper ceremony.
