Quick San Antonio trip report

My husband and I both had business in San Antonio yesterday and decided to make a little getaway out of the trip. First of all, thanks to SAGuy for suggesting Frijoles, a little cafe at the corner of W.W. White and Gembler Road, very close to where I needed to be. My fajita plate consisted of a big serving of beef (more like carne guisada than I expected, but very flavorful) with rice and refrieds, some very fresh guacamole, and two lovely handmade tortillas for $5.99. My husband had a fine chicken mole plate, also for $5.99. Service was fast and the place was very clean. When I lived in SA in the late 70's, one of the joys of the city was that you could find modest but delightful little Tex-Mex cafes like this all over town. I'm glad they are still there, if one knows where to look.
For dinner we went all the way across town to one of my husband's favorites, Pam's Patio Kitchen (Wurzbach at Lockhill-Selma). This is a nice little neighborhood place with good sandwiches and salads at lunch and a more ambitious menu in the evening. Last night the kitchen and the service seemed overwhelmed, and both were slow. However, when the food did arrive, it was very good. I had a light appetite and settled for a grilled salmon caesar salad; there was at least 9 oz. of perfectly cooked fish (I brought half home) atop a well-dressed salad. My husband's chicken saltimbocca, with sauteed spinach and angel hair pasta, would have been perfect if the chicken had not been slightly overcooked. The lemony sauce, with very fresh mushrooms, was excellent. Hot flatbread wedges were a pleasant accompaniment.
This morning at the Pearl Brewery farmer's market we found nice Texas olives and olive oil from Sandy Oaks Orchards down in Elmendorf, and watched people lining up outside Il Sogno for lunch. We headed on down the road to Luling for the best ribs I've had in years. My husband loved the sausage but said the brisket was a bit dry (it was about 1:00). I was too preoccupied with the ribs to see for myself. We brought home most of the brisket, so I'll check it out tomorrow.
We had planned to stop at the Stryk Dairy in Schulenberg to see if we could get some of their cheese, but with the Luling stop we ran out of time. A good time was had by all.
