Ebb Tide now soon to be Mexican place (Bar Taco) from owners of Barcelona

Read this on Liz Johnson's blog today... Ebb Tide in Port Chester just closed and the owners of all the Barcelona restaurants are going to be opening a place called Bar Taco:

I'm intrigued in a reserved way. If they do, indeed replicate Mexico City street food, I'm stoked. The description of making it kind of swanky cool or whatever isn't that thrilling to me, but others will probably like that.

I do hope it's priced reasonably. I'm not as high on Barcelona as others, but I'll definitely give this place a try when it opens. Regardless, having a more upscale Mexican in the neighborhood is welcome and overdue. Let's just hope it's good!

  1. Awwww....R.I.P. Ebb Tide, I will miss eating seafood & that lucious tomato salad on the deck in the warm weather. Let us hope that Bar Taco serves a good margarita.

Too bad they didn't serve Vietnamese.

Portchester does not need another Mexican restaurant.

I agree with you--I'd love to see Vietnamese, Afgahni, or something else a bit more off the beaten track.

While I'm as big of an advocate as any for Vietnamese, and wish so badly we had one in Westchester, I disagree we don't need another Mexican restaurant. There really aren't that many good ones - even in Port Chester. If I want a GREAT taco, there's only one place to go in PC, in my opinion.

PC has a lot of Latin. 60% mediocre, 20% bad, 20% good. There's always a place for increasing the top 20%. Let's just hope this is it.

What's the only taco place in PC you would go to?

            1. re: pabboy

Los Gemelos. Their tortillas are fresher and their carnitas are awesome. Kiosko, Luis', Zarape, Rancho Grande, etc., all have decent tacos, but Los Gemelos are simply better (almost always).

I'll check it out one of these days. When I venture out to PC it's almost always Peruvian. Its Los Gemelos better than Sunshine?

                1. re: pabboy

yes, Los Gemelos is better than Sunshine. Definitely. Sunshine has better al pastor and bistek/asada. But everything else is better at Los Gemelos. Sopes, tacos, tortas, pozole, chilaquiles.

The real star at Los Gemelos is the carnitas. Carnitas tacos there are fabulous. And if you are really hungry, go for the Carnitas torta.

was a great place. Sorry to see it gone.

        3. I'm with you Adam. I actually haven't been to other Barcelonas but would be nice to have a comfortable sit down and stay type of restaurant for some tacos, good Mexican food and a couple of drinks. I know you don't drink Adam but would be nice to be able to have a little libation with in a good atmosphere.

          1. So, is there anywhere else in Westchester to get a decent lobster roll?

Ur implying that ebbtides was good! It was awful. Sadly there is not and I have tried to have them everywhere I go. Morgans was way mediocre, whitby castle had put egg salad in theirs, had one as a special once at eastchester fish and it had cilantro in it. I'm no purist but in this case simple is better and at least serve it on a toasted buttered bun--doesn't have to be the split top new england style but something close. I have not been to the Pelham location yet but the Red Hook Fairway was famous for their lobster roll for $9. Now when I need the fix I go to the city to either Pearl Oyster bar or The Mermaid Inn.

What about Dayboat Cafe in Irvington? I have not been, but our friends want to try it this weekend.

                1. re: valerie

When is Bar Taco opening anyone know? Will have to get to dayboat cafe and report back...

                  1. re: cubanat

We ate at Dayboat last weekend, it was good, lobster roll was excellent, I had a nice piece of fish, prices are more or less reasonable and portions are not out of control.

Can't find the thread on best lobster roll in westchester/fairfield area but #1 as of today is day boat cafe. not new england style split top bun but close. crisp & buttery bread with simple mayo & lobster chunks. service could have been better but next time will just sit at the bar. the chowder sampler was decent as well. Much better than morgans & ruby's renditions. oddly enough the one at elm street is #2 so far.

Anyone know if this place has opened or do I have to go have a look?

In response to my own question above from five months ago, I hear Bar Taco is finally opened.

                        Anyone been yet?

                        1. re: laylag

really? a few weeks ago it looked like a construction site over there...

                            1. re: foodrink

They're open this week (soft opening, limited hours) and officially open next Monday.
