Where to get great or even good pie (MSP)

Saturday is National Pie Day. And so I thought I would post asking foiks if they have a favorite place for pie in the Twin Cities metro area. I'm mostly thinking about sweet dessert pies, but am willing to entertain savory ones too. Restaurants, bakeries, whatever.

We mostly - exclusively? - eat pie at home as my husband (mtullius here on chowhound; although prolly he'll be annoyed that I outed him. Sorry, honey! but not sorry enough, apparently) loves to make pie and makes a mean pie, in fact. But he doesn't believe that you can get pie anywhere that will be as good as homemade. He looked at me like I was crazy when I suggested asking the 'hounds about this.

So, am I right that there's got to be somewhere that does good pie. Or is my husband right that when it comes to pie nothing beats or is as good as homemade? (this is like when those couples call the Car Talk show on NPR and ask for Click & Clack to settle a disagreement between the couple!)

In any case, I hope everyone will enjoy National Pie Day and have pie, where ever you get it!

  1. I've had Betty's Pies at Two Harbors, and they have a White Bear Lake location. Good stuff.

    1. When in a pie mood I tend to go to A Piece of Cake bakery on Selby in St Paul for some hand-held pies.

Serlin's on Arcade, if they are still open, has delicious pie that I thought was equal in quality to the best homemade pies.

Other than these two experiences, I have found it is hard to top a skilled home baker for pie. There is just so much mediocre pie in the world, probably due to commercial baking shortcuts.

And wait...I thought pie day was 3/14. Or is that just pi day?

      1. So not in the Twin Cities...but I really liked the pie at the New Scenic Cafe in Duluth, MN. It was on par with very good homemade pie (which I agree is generally superior).

Turtle Bread's is pretty good, and I noticed some very good-looking blueberry pie at Mayday Cafe recently.....heard very good reports on it too.

50"s Grill in Brooklyn Center. They have an onsite bakery and everything is from scratch. I particularly like their Cherry pie. The cherries are extra tart which I love. They have about 15 varieties to choose from.

          2. The first place that came to mind is Jerabek's in St. Paul. (

Their pastries and desserts taste like the homemade ones my mom made back when I was young.
