Long layover at Fort Lauderdale airport, anything chow worthy?

We have a 4 hr layover on our way to Treasure Cay Saturday, any suggestions? Would rather not leave the secure area, unless we have to. Flying on Continental.

  1. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing better than Chili's at the airport....It's an embarrassment!

    1. I guess I'll save my appetite for some fresh seafood when we get there.

As someone who has been stuck in that particular airport many times flying standby, Save your appetite and your wallet for decent food when you arrive at your destination. There is nothing worth spending a cent on in that airport, its a barren wasteland.

      2. Look for Chef Allen's 2go

Jerk Grilled Chicken with Curry Slaw
Chef Allen’s Mango Ketchup, Red Peppers & Raisins, Challah Roll

Lime Roasted Turkey & Manchego Cheese
Organic Arugula, Chef Allen’s Key Lime Mojo Aioli, Multi Grain Bread

Chimichurri Roast Beef & Fire Roasted Peppers
        Caramelized Onions, Organic Field Greens,
Chef Allen’s Tamarind Sauce, Ciabatta Bread

Papaya Pineapple BBQ Ham & Swiss Cheese
Organic Arugula, Pommery Mustard, Onion Panini Bread

Key Lime Tuna Salad with Plantain Chips
Organic Mixed Greens, Tomato Salsa & Chef Allen’s Cilantro Vinaigrette

        Crunchy Caribbean Chicken Cobb Salad
Chicken, Ham, Mango, Green Peppers, Corn & Black Bean Salsa,
Pico de Gallo, Romaine & Chef Allen’s Key Lime Vinaigrette

Chicken Caesar with Heart of Palm Salad
Romaine, Cherry Tomatoes, Asiago Garlic Crouton,
Shaved Parmesan, Chef Allen’s Caesar Dressing

Wild Florida Shrimp, Watermelon & Blue Chips
Organic Greens, Napa Cabbage, Chef Allen’s Hot Mango Cocktail Sauce

Wow!! When did that open and in which terminal??

          1. re: gblcsw

A couple of months ago and it is my understanding that he is in all terminals. (can't confirm that though)

Thanks for the rec, I'll look out for them.

            1. re: saeyedoc

I tried one of those Chef Allen sandwiches in Terminal 3 (JetBlue) last week. They sound much better then then look and taste.
If you have 4 hours and it's not a peak security line time, then I'd venture out of the airport and check out either Anthony's Runway 84 or Anthony's Coal Fire Pizza.

Actually if you have four hours you can take a cab to Tom Jenkins. It is about 3 miles north of the airport on us1

Thanks, but plenty of good BBQ here in Texas.

Also, this isn't the best Cuban food in South Florida (very run down establishment), but it is authentic and close to the airport if you'd like to try something different.

If you are interested in cabbing out and back through security, you could consider Jaxson's Ice Cream, just a few miles from the airport. No "fancy" food, but decent burgers with sweet potato fries and the best ice cream in South Florida.

The ice cream selections are HUGE so plan to share. Everything is made in house: ice cream, toppings, etc.

The reviews for Anthony's Runway 84 make me think even the airport is a better bet.

                    1. re: Cyndigo

People love to disparage Anthony's Runway 84, but the food has been top-notch every time I have ever been.

It was my FIL's favorite restaurant while he was alive.

                    2. re: danb73

Yeah, Chef Allen is not good. Take a cab and pick one of the many good restaurants recommended on the FL boards. There are all kinds depending on your mood at the time within $20 fare.

                2. Any Cuban restos close to FLL? (had some nice empanadas at the Miami airport last year - La Carreta?)

Well did some more searching and found that Rustic Inn would be a good place - we've never had Stone Crabs before!

                  2. Ended up eating at Chili's on both legs of the trip. The stuff at Chef Allen's did not look good. Chili's was not good either. Had the sliders, overcooked, dry, crappy buns. Wife ordered buffalo chicken, blah. Had an app sampler on the way back, not good either. I feel bad for anyone that has to travel through there regularly.
