Has anyone been here lately? I did a find search on the board and couldn't find any threads. We're going to a jazz performance next Wednesday at Jax and wanted to have yummy eats before hand. Thanks!

Try Carousel across the street (or for lighter eating Portos a block down) - that way you can walk to Jax. Enjoy!

Avoid Cinnabar! Awful food and worse service - I never understand why people rate it highly and go back. Rates one of my worst restaurant experience in LA.

Rafi's on Colorado (i think about two blocks off brand on the north side is good to)

I haven't been in about ten years, but used to go quite often after Duplex closed in 1992. And from 1992-1996 (when I went quite often) it was quite good, and the bar from Yee mee Lo's always looked great and they had the pewter mugs from the Cock n Bull with which they made nice Moscow Mules.

Ditto Carousel - love their eggplant and tourshi. My original post still stands. We've been back at least 3 times since, and it has always been excellent.

I like the food at Jax. Their steaks are good (but not great) and the service is superb. Plus, you're guaranteed a comfy seat for the performance.

Cinnabar's good. Like Jerome, I haven't been in a while (two years in my case) but the food is good and inventive (kind of fusiony.) The restaurant is attractive inside, though I found it a bit claustrophic. The bar is indeed terrific, and they are famous for their ability to make perfect versions of many obsolescent and old-school cocktails, such as a Sazerac (sp?), though drinks are not cheap here.

It's a cool place and certainly a great option if you want an attractive/hip place with an adventurous menu but have to be in Glendale. I do remember it being a bit on the expensive side for what you get.

Linked below is someone's blog with a play-by-play of a Cinnabar meal (scroll all the way down.)

By the way, if there are ten posts eviscerating a place by people whose names you don't recognize, and one more measured response from someone you do, heavily weight the recognized 'hound...especially if that 'hound is Jerome.

Not only is the food NOT mediocre, it is quite good, the place fairly pleasant and the staff quite nice. You will never think of it as your definitive meal, but no worse than most places that others like on this board. Alvin and Flame(his wife who works on Tuesdays)can be lots of fun. Alvin and his son Robert used to own Cafe Jacoulet in Pasadena, and they separated and went their own ways, but they both know how to operate restaurants and provide good food and experience.

FWIW,

the one meal I had at Cinnabar was quite good. I remember a tasty smoked lobster dish and an interesting 'thai bouilabaise' (sp?).

Unless the standards have dropped precipitously in the last year, it's a place I'd happily go back to.

Had a very decent meal there in January - details are sketchy. SO had some kind of salmon that he enjoyed, I had a quite tasty and extremely large pork chop. I know we had an appetizer that we both liked a lot. Excellent selection of cocktails too. I would not classify this restaurant as mediocre. It's very good but not stand out. Service was excellent.
