Post 390: Ridiculously Bad Service

Tried Post 390 for lunch today.

Wasn't too crowded. We were seated right away at one of the few tables that wasn't bathed in eye-searing sunlight. Waiter takes drink orders and ice teas were requested. This is where everthing began to go downhill.

It took 20 minutes for the ice tea to arrive.

The waiter had completely disappeared. As we grew antsy, another table just up and left while someone at another formed a search party. Waiter guy finally showed up ... with coffee for another table, completely ignoring everyone else. 20 after being ordered, the ice teas arrived with no sweetner and no apologies.

We ordered food. Requests for substitute sides were met with attitude. It took a long time for the food to arrive and it really wan't worth the wait. The kitchen has a seasoning problem, with many items being quite salty and others woefully underseasoned. Our sandwiches and sides were pronounced "meh."

They do have a nice dessert menu and despite the fact that lunch had run to about 1:15 hours long at this point, we all ordered.

Once again, there was a substantial wait. Our waiter loitered around chatting with the hostess and staring at us. By this time the sun was hitting our table and someone in our party got up and attempted to move the bulky curtain. Waiter made no attempt to help her, even though he was only a few feet away.

Jokes about waiting for them to grow the carrots for the carrot cake got stale after awhile, but what could we do? Finally he left and came back with banana cream pie and carrot cake. DESSERT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT. They were spectacular! Moist cake, yummy icing, perfect pie filling and great crust.

Although I'm not sure we'll ever go back for lunch, I might consider a dessert and a glass of wine at the bar if I'm having a bad day.

They obviously must have a very bad manager to allow service like that to happen (who has trained the wait staff and who keeps them in check?). You aren't alone apparently in your assessment of the service, not only is it bashed in the Herald article, but I've heard several other people complain about it.

My same co-worker had lunch there about two weeks ago because his dining companions chose it. He said the service was worse than before if that could be humanly possible.

He said he considered not ordering an entree and just having dessert, but that to avoid seeming weird he ordered a sandwich which was ok -- nothing to write home about. Dessert still the highlight ofthe meal.

Mat Schaffer kicks the crap out of Post 390's service in his Boston Herald review today: http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/food_dining/reviews/view/20100115post_service_lacks_stamp_of_approval/

As I've posted here and elsewhere, I'm not a fan. It particularly offends me that they put up the trappings of a craft cocktail bar with their specialty cocktail list but make really awful drinks. I think the atmosphere is great, but I have found the food and service middling on several visits. That does not appear to be keeping the crowds away, however.

I was there last month on a Sunday evening. It was the day that the big snowstorm was winding down, so it wasn't crowded. They sat us upstairs in the area by the fireplace. The service was great. The waiter was very pleasant and attentive. We basically had burgers and the fish sandwiches which were good.
