What are pigeon peas and where to find in SF-Marin?

And/or is there a reasonable canned substitute?

    1. Also known as gandules or toor dal (skinned and spllit), if that helps you. Just before New Year's I noticed fresh pigeon peas in the pod at an Indian grocer in Belmont that had been air-freighted from the Dominican Republic. Otherwise you can buy whole dried ones in bulk at Rainbow Grocery, toor dal (aka tuver or tur daal) at Indian grocers, or canned pigeon peas (Goya brand) at Latino grocers.
