El Paraiso--Mexican (South Bend, IN)

Bada Bing Jan 12, 2010 10:24 AM

It appears that this place hasn't been mentioned on this board. I just had a terrific lunch there and would like to suggest that people try it and that local hounds suggest other good Mexican around South Bend.

El Paraiso is on South Main just below Western. It's a good-sized, stand-alone building because most of the space goes to a really good looking Mexican grocery. I went there to get a tortilla press, and got a cast iron made-in-Mexico press for $10, less than half than Amazon charges for them. Also found a great supply of El Milagro corn tortillas (out of Chicago) at 49 cents, less than half what my favorite supermarket charges for lesser corn tortillas. Lots of authentic produce, etc.

But to one side is also a sit-down eatery, and that's great stuff. They had at least 8 quite different meat/pork/chicken options in a display case that had everything looking terrific. My Spanish is not good enough to be sure what the fellow called the one I picked for a Platillos lunch, but it was clearly a green tomatillo sauced braise of what appeared to be unusually cut pork rib sections. The ribs were cut across into 1.5" sections that made the resulting meat look almost like little oxtail cylinders. Lots of bone and connective tissue in the mix to make the sauce really unctuous, and the meat was falling off the bone and deliciously spiced. (Not especially spicy, but hardly bland). Served with refried beans, rice, lettuce and a tomato slice, with a separate container of warmed corn tortillas. $8.50 including the drink. It was awesome!

There are lots and lots of recommendations for South Bend in the discussion at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/125485 Some of the posts are older but it's been kept up to date by recent reports as well!

Thanks--but, yes, I know that thread, and it's largely mum on Mexican, except that one person I think bemoans that there is no good Mexican food here.

There is PLENTY of good Mexican food in SB/Mishawaka! I've enjoyed Mazatlan on McKinley. My boss SWEARS by a place on Western, but I'm not sure what it's called. In Plymouth, Yolanda does it right at her place downtown, Fiesta Mexicana. And Mi Camino Real makes fantastic margaritas.....

          Thanks.

So Mazatlan is open? I somehow thought it was closed long ago, but I might be mixing it up with some other place on McKinley that I've driven by.
